The South Korean company posted forecast-beating earnings of $3.14 billion, compared to a net profit of $1.02 billion a year earlier.
Its July-September sales rose 29 percent to $21.0 billion during the quarter from $16.3 billion last year.
Samsung said its record profits were attributed to not only an increased demand for mobile devices but also higher prices for memory chips, flat screen TVs and liquid crystal displays.
It sold 60.2 million handsets in the third quarter, up 16 percent from last year and is gaining market share.

As the biggest company for cellphone produter Nokia Company ,today announced a global recall of some 14 million chargers because some of them could cause a dangerous electrical shock. 
The Espoo, Finland-based company said the recall includes charger models AC-3E and AC-3U, made between June 15 and Aug. 9 this year; and AC-4U, manufactured between April 13 and Oct. 25, 2009.
All three models were made by Chinese battery maker BYD and sold mostly in North America and Europe.

Japanese tech giant Toshiba plans to sell a portable fuel-cell that can recharge mobile phones and other digital gadgets on the move, starting next week.
The company said palm-sized fuel-cell, called Dynario, generates electricity through a chemical reaction — injecting methanol with oxygen — to recharge mobile devices in a few seconds through a USB cable.
Consumers buy refill cartridge, each generating enough power to charge two handsets.
